Urban Rose turns love of Macrame into dream business
Self confessed Macrame addict and owner of Urban Rose, Sarah Waddilove explains exactly what Macrame is, where her love for it came from and how she's turned her passion into a dream business.
Hi I am Sarah and I'm a Macrame addict……..
When I tell people I am a macrame artist, I normally get puzzled looks and a response of ‘what is that, never heard of it?’ So here goes...[Geek Alert]
‘Macrame is the art of knotting string in patterns to make decorative pieces’
Macrame has made a huge comeback over the last couple of years and the beauty of this art is its diversity. It is seen in wall hangings, to the popular 70’s plant hangings from clutch bags, swing chairs and it even makes an appearance at weddings.
Since I was knee high I have always wanted to be my own boss and start my own business - one which also fulfilled my creative side. The feeling you get when you complete each piece knowing you have used your hands to make something that someone wants to proudly display in their home is like no other. It's pure happiness.
I tried my hand at many crafts such as textiles, and printing but none really gave me a buzz, this is when I decided to found Urban Rose in 2016.
It came about as a complete happy accident. Looking through Instagram I stumbled across some beautiful pieces made from rope and decided to give it a go and I haven’t looked back. I am self taught and always thinking about new ideas.
I run workshops for like-minded people who want to give this a go and can be found at Hero, Stockbridge on 4th October and on 26th November [venue being released soon].
If you can't make either of these dates but want to see more then come and see me on Sunday 15th October at the Winchester Artisan Market. I will happily give you more information or answer any questions you might have.
To finish my first blog for Winchester Bloggers, here's a few facts about me:
- I can’t function in the morning without my first cup coffee
- I love plants, but they don't love me
- I'm keen on fitness and have run a 20-mile, 200-obstacle race
- My fluffball is the prettiest cat ever (so she says!)
- Gin is my go to tipple
